Reserve Batsara unique not only in Georgia but throughout the world. In addition to diverse flora and fauna, there remained only one in the world untouched yew (Taxus baccata) Grove - about 120 hectares. The average age of these trees are 1,500 years, and some of them more than 1,700 years. Yew very slow growing tree, and only after 1,000 years reaches a height of 20-25 meters. In Batsara one of the yew’s are over 35 meters high. According to legend, Queen Tamar said - ask me to cut any tree, except for those, here comes the Georgian name of the yew "Uthovari." On another it is called Angel’s Tree in folk tradition in every yew lives by an angel and if cut it, the blood of angel will shed (tree inside is dark red). Our route is of average difficulty: The difference in height between the start and end points of about 450 m. (Approximately 700 meters rising to 1050 m. Above sea level). A walking path runs along the river and takes place in the dense forests. It is possible to meet a deer or a deer, but impossible to meet predators (bears, wolves, wild boar, etc.). The road in the same direction 4.5 km. The first 4 km walk along the river and are lighter than the rest of 500 meters which extends in a sharp rise of 200 meters. We arrive at the Reserve Batsara and passing registration. Since Batsara is a nature reserve, it is imperative that everyone, who want to view it would sent passport data to the Agency of Protected Areas, for official permission. Otherwise, no one would be allowed. At the entrance to the reserve is administrative building where we all go through registration. After that, our group will one get one of the rangers.
12:00 - 16:00
Visiting reserve and going to the yew-tree grove, where we will see the biggest and oldest yew, which is called the "Tree of the Patriarch." Ranger will explain to us the rules of conduct in the reserve. For example it is forbidden to light fires, or pluck a plant or fruit.
16:00 - 20:00
On the way back, we can have a picnic and make a fire near administration building.
20:00 - 22:30
Driving back to Tbilisi.
